CHS Regatta

On Sunday the 20th of February, our rowing squad made the 6-hour trip up to the beautiful Clarence River in Grafton, to participate in the annual Combined High Schools regatta. This regatta is for all public school rowers, lasting from the 21st to the 22nd of February. Our entire squad performed exceptionally well, with almost every crew achieving a podium finish.

The regatta started with a foggy Monday morning, but this did not deter anyone’s spirits. The senior quad kicked off the regatta by coming second in the Championship Women’s quad. Our Year 9 rowers continued this high-performing streak- all of their singles and doubles performed well in the under-16 heats, with most crews making it to finals the next day. Later that night the rowers, coaches, teachers and parent helpers all enjoyed a delightful dinner at the Grafton hotel, in preparation for Day 2 of races.

Tuesday was forecast to be a much sunnier and more pleasant day. The aforementioned Year 9 doubles came second and third in their finals, with one of the Year 9 singles coming second. The Year 9 rowers continued to amaze as both quads came first and second in their competitive under-16 finals. Then, it was the Year 8’s turn- CHS was our beginner rowers’ very first regatta of the season, and they should be commended for their efforts. The three quads came first, second and third in their under-15 finals. The senior double also came second in their competitive women’s under-17 double race, despite being up against bigger and stronger crews. Shoutout to the Year 10 and 11 rowers who attempted some of their first double and single races.

A big congratulations goes out to every person who raced over the two days at Grafton! Our rowing squad received a number of compliments from many different schools, commending us on our fantastic team spirit and excellent sportsmanship. We finished second in the overall points score for schoolgirls, a mere 6 points behind Grafton High.

A very big thank you to all the teachers, parents, convenors and coaches who made this regatta such a successful one. To Ms Connors, Ms Parnaby and Ms Juhasz- we really appreciate you not only helping organise the logistics of the regatta, but going one step further and coming up to watch us race. Thank you to the Year 8, 9, 10 and 11 parents and our coaches Phill Brown, Craig Williams and James Halliday, who took the time out of their week to come to Grafton to support and facilitate the regatta. To the parents Vickie and Rick Cheung, Lillian Li, Michael Zhang, Shirley Jiang, Mel and Andrew Carnegie, and Jennifer He, thank you for all your help in organising transport for us to get to CHS. Finally, to our convenors Thusi Kumarage and Michael Zhang, and parents Amali Kumarage and Mel Carnegie, thank you for all the time and effort you put in behind the scenes to ensure all our rowers could achieve their full potential and make it out to Grafton, despite the prevailing COVID situation.
