On the first week of the school holidays I participated in the annual National Junior Table Tennis Championships which was held in Wollongong, New South Wales, this year. For the first time, teams from New Zealand played as well and they were quite formidable!
This year marks my sixth junior nationals. There were over 300 juniors from all over Australia and New Zealand, which was a 30% increase from last year. Out of the four age groups, I represented the Under 18 NSW Girls team. The week was filled with intense yet rewarding singles, doubles and teams events. In a heated singles match, I won against one of the top three players in Australia. This secured me a place in the Order of Merit, which ranks the Top 10 players in each age group, where I ranked 6th in the Under 18 Girls group.
Wollongong's weather contrasted to the scorching temperatures in Townsville, Queensland where the previous junior nationals were held. With the chilly early morning and late night matches, I'm still surprised I persevered despite the cold! After the championships I was able to visit the Wollongong Head Lighthouse which is still operating daily and next to the heritage-listed Wollongong Harbour.
