Latin Year 11

On Wednesday the 20th of July 2022, 18 students from our Year 11 Latin class attended the annual Senior Classics Dinner at Newington College. We had the opportunity to mingle with other classics students from different schools, including Newington, PLC, SCEGGS Darlinghurst and Sydney Girls. Dinner was a three-course meal, held in the lavish Centenary Hall, with alfredo penne pasta for the entree, tomato chicken with beans and mashed potatoes for the main, and a rich chocolate cake with a raspberry sauce for dessert (very yummy!).

Although these foods weren’t necessarily classics themed, a Latin and Ancient Greek trivia quiz ran throughout the night. Questions included translate the crude Latin to find a 2021 movie title, guessing whether an ancient name was a ‘lover’ or ‘river’, and some good old scansion.

Alongside the dinner, students were encouraged to come in costume. Many students dressed up in classics costume, depicting ancient poets, Roman soldiers and even mythological fables (one you may recognise is the notable Trojan Horse), vying for the chance to win the prizes for the best individual and/or group costume. Our class dressed up together as Caesar and the conspirators and re-enacted his assassination, ultimately winning the prize for the best ensemble costume and a $100 voucher for a bookstore for our teacher Ms Moon to use for Latin resources!

A lovely time was had by all, and we enjoyed our three hours of dining, chatting with other senior classics students, answering Latin trivia and winning costume competitions! Although dinner lasted long into the night, we all managed to get home safely. We had a wonderful experience at the annual Senior Classics Dinner 2022, gaining lots of insight into HSC Latin, and hope to attend again next year.
