212 students from Years 7-10 took to Music Camp like a duck to water in more than one sense of the phrase as almost continuous rain provided the backdrop for this year’s instalment of Co-Curricular Music’s annual camp to Stanwell Tops.
While we had to leave our senior ensembles at home due to Covid restrictions, our younger students made the very most of tutorial sessions, rehearsals and sectionals over the course of the camp. New skills were learned, new friends were made, and new memories were shared amongst Junior Band, Junior Strings, Concert Band, Camerata, Chamber Orchestra, Symphonic Winds and Jazz Ensemble.
Camp was led by 8 superb conductors and educators: Louise Horwood, Lemin Luu, Patrick Brennan, Mar’yana Sywak, Louis Sharpe, Matthew Keegan, Aeree Kim and Steve Hillinger. They were joined on Saturday by 14 professional tutors who led our instrumental tutorial sessions.
While I am so proud of every musician who challenged themselves over the weekend – special congratulations go to our wonderful lower brass students for their performance alongside Michael Wyborn and his trombone collective on Saturday night:
Trombones: Carol Li, Xinyun Zhang, Lydia Chen, Julia Hein, Amy Jin, Iris Liu, Clarisse Tang
Euphoniums: Chelsea Lu, Muhan Shi, Rikita Jyoshith, Chloe Wang, Danica Hoang, Cathy Lu, Daisy Meng, Felicity Moy
Tuba: Xenia Chen, Angela Liu and Julia Wang
Music Camp concluded with our regular showcase concert, albeit without the support of our wonderful parent audience. However, this did give us the unique opportunity for our students to listen to each other play and share in the hard work they had put in over the course of camp.
My sincere thanks to the fantastic teachers who gave up their weekend to help keep us happy and healthy: Ms Chen, Ms Williams, Mr Stojanovic and Ms O’Brien, along with our camp parents Melanie, Jenny, Lanthia, Gorton, Kai, Jason and Stephanie!
